The permanent make-up
Gone are the days of applying makeup. Permanent and semi-permanent makeup is a cosmetic treatment for the brows, lips and eyes used to produce looks that resemble makeup, such as eyeliner. Designed to give you a subtle natural finish of perfectly applied makeup, it’s a miracle treatment that will put an end to those nightmare minutes in the morning spent putting your face on. Perfect for those busy, always-on-the-go professionals, sporty outdoor types or those who simply want to look good 24/7.
How does it work?
Let’s face it; we all get bored with applying makeup. Not only does it take up valuable time in the morning, but it also has the tendency of smudging, running and smearing. Permanent or semi-permanent makeup otherwise known as micro pigmentation is a process whereby hypoallergenic pigments (this means there are no fragrances or other ingredients added) are inserted into the dermal layer (lower layer) of the skin, usually using a needle. This makes it stay put all day, every day without smudging or wearing off. So, whether you’re taking a dip in the pool or splashing about at the beach, there’s no need to worry about it exposing your au naturale look.
Permanent or semi permanent makeup can be applied to the brows, lips, and eyes to enhance your natural features and take years off your appearance. It will help to give lift to the brows and give the illusion of fuller lips, without resorting to going under the knife so it’s a great non-surgical alternative to anti-ageing treatments. What’s more it can also be used to disguise scars and white spots in the skin.
The treatment, which takes one to two hours depending on what is required, will begin with a detailed consultation where you will pick your desired colours and definitions. Careful measurements are then taken and guiding curves are drawn onto the face before the treatment begins. When the client is completely happy with the colours and definitions selected, the permanent and semi-permanent make-up technology is applied.
For most people the procedure itself isn’t painful but for others it can be a little uncomfortable depending on the individual’s pain threshold. However anaesthetic creams are applied prior to and throughout treatment to keep any discomfort to a minimum.
Unlike other surgical treatments, you can resume normal activities straight after the treatment. It might be a good idea to book some time off work as there is the chance of slight swelling or redness on the area. The treated area will also appear darker and more exact immediately after the treatment, but will lighten and soften over a few days.
Depending on skin type and lifestyle, permanent and semi-permanent makeup can last for several years to a decade. Over that time the colour will fade and break down, therefore it’s suggested to return to the clinic between every 18 months to two years to for a top up procedure, to keep the look complete and fresh.
Is it for me?
It’s suitable for everyone including men, women, the young and the not so young. Many people find that it saves them precious time every morning, gives the face a ‘younger’ and healthier looking appearance and also has the obvious benefit of staying put all day and all night.
Good to know
Although it was unbeknown to many people, permanent and semi-permanent makeup dates back to the start of the 20th century. Famous tattooist George Burchett, who developed the technique, described how many beauty salons tattooed women without them knowing, offering it as a ‘complexion treatment of injecting vegetable dye under the top layer of the skin’
